Crocheting an oval is one of the basic amigurumi shapes. An oval is started with a foundation chain, and stitching into this chain often stretches causing gaps.
The secret to starting an oval without gaps requires a careful balance of technique and stitch placement, stitching into the “back bump” of the foundation chain. Begin by creating a foundation chain that matches the desired width of your oval, and then work in rounds that gradually increase the stitch count.
Instructions
Start a foundation chain:
Chain (ch) 6: This will form the center of your oval.
Instead of crocheting through just the back loop of the chain like normal, you’ll put your hook through the back loop of the chain and the back bump.
Round 1: 5 single crochets (sc). Rotate the piece to work on the other side of the chain: inc, 3 sc, inc (12)
Start as normal, putting your hook through the back loop of the second chain from the hook.
Flip the chain over and identify the first back bump.
Insert the hook through the back bump of the chain.
Continue your stitch as normal: yarn over and pull through the back bump and the back loop of the chain.
Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook to complete the single crochet.
Repeat for the remaining 4 sc.
Rotate the piece and continue the round as specified through the front loops of the foundation chain.
