Learn The Twisted Single Crochet Stitch
Bored with standard edging and want to add a quick and easy new stitch to your repertoire? Learn how to create a sturdy, rope-like finish with the twisted single crochet.
The twisted single crochet is a great stitch to quickly upgrade the edges of an amigurumi piece like a flower pot, or collar when a single crochet feels too plain. It’s also great for finishing a blanket, a set of coasters, or a new beanie.
It creates a neat, rounded, cord-like edge that looks far more complicated than it actually is. It’s sturdy, it holds its shape beautifully, and it adds a lovely textural "pop" to the edge of any project.
If you can single crochet, you can definitely master this twist. It just takes one magical flick of the wrist. Let’s grab our hooks and get twisted!
What is the Twisted Single Crochet?
The twisted single crochet is essentially a regular single crochet stitch with a 360-degree rotation thrown into the middle of the process.
This rotation twists the two loops currently on your hook around each other before you complete the stitch. This locks the yarn into a tight, twisted formation that sits on top of the fabric edge like a piece of thin rope.
Note: The twisted single crochet is also an alternative to a crab stitch. A crab stitch creates the same effect, but is worked backwards into your final round of stitches so it can be a little more difficult. Look it up, maybe you’d prefer it!

Twisted Single Crochet Instructions
Continue from your previous round or row as if you’re going to complete a single crochet:
Draw up the loop from your previous stitch so it’s a little looser than normal (if your loops are too tight, it will be difficult to pull your yarn through later).
Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over.
Pull the hook through the stitch and draw up the loop loosely. You should have two loops on your hook.
Now here’s the twist: Rotate your hook 360˚ forward (the same direction you’re stitching).
Yarn over and pull through both loops.
That’s it!
