Stop the Wobble: The Simple Stitch Swap for Perfectly Flat Bases

Let’s be real: there is nothing more frustrating than finishing a beautiful project only for it to wobble, tilt, or lean because the base isn’t actually flat.

Most patterns tell you to use Back Loop Only (BLO) to create that 90-degree turn from the bottom to the sides. It works, but it can be a bit "soft." If you want a base that is crisp, structural, and sits perfectly flush against the table, it’s time to swap those BLO stitches for Back Post stitches.

The "Wobble" Problem: BLO vs. Back Post

When you crochet in the Back Loop Only, you’re leaving the front loop unworked. This creates a visible line and a hinge. It’s great for flexibility, but because you're only attached to half of the stitch, it can stretch—leading to a rounded "belly" on the bottom of your work.

Back Post Stitches, however, wrap around the entire post of the stitch from the previous round. This forces the fabric to fold at a sharp angle and creates a sturdy "rim" that acts like a foundation for your walls.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn of your choice

  • Corresponding crochet hook

  • Pattern with a round of BLO

How to Make the Swap

If your pattern calls for a round of BLO Single Crochet, you can replace it 1:1 with Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC) when it has the same stitch count as the previous round (i.e. the BLO round doesn’t include any increases or decreases).

Here is how you do it:

  1. Chain 1: This isn’t necessary, but starting with a chain can help keep the transition more even (skip the chain when beginning a new round).

  2. Identify the Post: Instead of looking at the "V" on top of the stitch, look at the vertical "body" (the post) of the stitch from the round below.

  3. Insert Your Hook: Insert your hook from the back of your work to the front, then back to the rear through the next stitch, going around the post of the stitch.

  4. Complete the Stitch: Yarn over, pull up a loop (around the post), yarn over, and pull through both loops on your hook.

Combine this technique with some additional tips for making round amigurumi stand up straight.

Why this creates a flatter base:

  • Structural Integrity: You are anchored to the strongest part of the stitch.

  • The "Ledge": It pushes the top "V" of the previous round forward, creating a decorative and functional edge that helps the piece stand upright.

  • Zero Stretch: Unlike BLO, the post of the stitch doesn't pull or elongate, so your base stays the exact size you intended.

When to Use This Trick

This is a game-changer for amigurumi with BLO stitches, and especially great when working pieces from the bottom up. Try it on one of these patterns today!
